Cabin Pressure is back! And for those of you odd people who maybe rather quite like it but whose lives don't revolve around fangirling BC (what is wrong with you...), it's available to listen to worldwide for the next 7 days at the BBC site here.

Review of sorts:

Have listened to it only once so far, and I'm already looking forward to listening to it again (in contrast to, say, RDX, which to date I haven't felt the need to revisit at all despite enjoying parts of it), so it definitely at least met whatever imaginary benchmark I'd set for it. I think there's always a lot of pressure for something so loved, and I was terribly pleased that JF is clever enough to subvert his own Birling tropes and play on them, and not simply repeat them. That, and Camel Camel. Also Arthur and Martin both showed interesting flashes of character development in this episode, so it's lovely to think they're coming into their own a bit, even if in a typically disastrous fashion. Carolyn and Douglas took a bit of a back seat in this one, although I'm sure they'll get their time later, especially hearing that Carolyn is still going out with Herc, yay.

As [livejournal.com profile] drinkingcocoa and [livejournal.com profile] pennswoods have also mentioned (see comments), I was likewise kind of hyperaware that BC's profile has risen considerably since the last recording, and I felt somehow he wasn't quite as haplessly 'Martinesque' as previously. However, I really can't judge if that's just my imagination, or well-considered character development (because BC is just that good, ha), or a thing-which-really-is-just-happening-to-happen. I suppose any or all are possible that now Martin's coming up with unexpectedly evil plans and colluding shamelessly with Douglas. He's really not as hapless as he used to be. Hmmm. I also hoped that Martin (and Douglas) got to keep the two-thousand-pound tip at least, although I somehow doubt it.

I think I cracked up completely twice. Once at the whisky reveal, which I physically applauded, and Martin exasperatedly insisting, "Ouagadougou Ouagadougou", which must have caused audience hysteria if it were anywhere near as hilarious to watch as it was to listen to.

Quick fic rec: I've been developing a small thing for Sherlock/Lestrade (yes, in addition to everything else), and am hopelessly enamoured of Consolation by [livejournal.com profile] mildred_bobbin (LJ/AO3). I've read it three times in as many days. I think that every time I first get into a pairing I long for a single fic that captures exactly what I wanted to see from them, and for Sherlock/Lestrade, this one is it. The trickiest thing for Sherlock/Lestrade for me is that John is an immovable part of Sherlock's universe. I don't have a problem with this for Mycroft/Sherlock, because the two of them have a long shared history John has had no part in. Sherlock/Lestrade pre-John is also quite plausible. But a post-Reichenbach one has to work for it, and I love the way Sherlock and John end up fully acknowledging what they are to each other without betraying the people they've in effect 'chosen' to love. Lestrade is perfect here - he understands he's a substitute for John, at least to begin with, but refuses to let Sherlock have it both ways, so to speak. No-one gets particularly sappy or overly possessive, or acts in a way I find unlikely - Lestrade simply gives Sherlock the freedom to work out what he really wants, but insists that he acknowledge it as well. I just loved it; I suppose I do have a weakness for this kind of emotional complexity in fic.

Also spent time watching the Rupert Graves highlights of Maurice on Youtube. For reasons. I've always loved that movie - I saw it at the cinema when it was first released, bought the book, later the video. At one point I could probably have outlined it to you scene by scene. It's still gorgeous, after all these years (as is Rupert Graves).

I think there are a few Bowie peeps around - what did you think of Where Are We Now? I like the overall sound of it but am a) seriously weirded out by the video and b) find the lyrics veering wildly from 'vaguely interesting' to 'banal'. I still love his voice, though.

Finally got hold of a library copy of Deep Blue Sea (Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston). I realised last night that I hadn't quite finished watching it, but thought I had. That probably sums it up for me. TH is obviously very pretty, and the acting was excellent all around, but there are times when 'slow' in movie reviews actually means 'deep, contemplative, thoughtful', and times when it simply means... slow. Hester (Rachel Weisz) is torn between her stuffy middle-aged judge husband (Simon Russell Beale) and a wild young RAF pilot (Tom Hiddleston) who treats her badly. It's the kind of thing I think I would normally enjoy, but in this case I just wish I cared more.

Oh, and I loved this pic, firstly because the green is gorgeous, but also because, lol, antlers. Fine, I'm 12 :P

Hahahahaha!

CP, funny as always XD.

I had to listen to it in about 5 parts - stupid interruptions - but there were some awesome moments.
I cheered at the Yellow Car mention XD

Devious Martin is awesome. Everyone was acting unlike themselves, as Carolyn pointed out.

I personally was never that fond of the Yellow Car thing... but Camel Camel? Yes *g*

Antlers! heee! ;D

I was just looking at "Deep Blue Sea" while it was sitting on the shelf yesterday, wondering if I should check it out. I fall asleep during 'slow' these days. *g* Oh, well.

xx

LOL, look there's a truly glorious love scene and some general prettiness, so it's still worth a look. Just, you know, have your craft on as well or something *g*

Alas, I very much doubt they got to keep their two thousand pound tip. :(

I re-listened to some of my favorite episodes from seasons 1-3 before listening to this one and didn’t notice any difference in the way Martin was being portrayed (other than he was a bit surprisingly machievellian, but then he spends the entire episode stressing about it). But then again I am ridiculously biased in favor of BC’s acting, so really, who can say? LOL! The only thing I noticed that was different was that the applause was much louder at the beginning and end!

Thanks for the Lestrade/Sherlock rec. I haven’t read that one and love L/S! :)

Finally, that pic is soooo gorgeous. How have I not noticed the antlers before this?!?! I’ve just been fixated on how lovely and natural BC’s smile is. :)

Sigh. But I feel it must mean things will go better for Martin this series. Surely *g*. Yes, honestly, I feel that by this time next year BC will be something of a phenomenom. Not that he isn't already in some circles, lol. I do hope he'll continue to do CP, assuming it continues to exist!

...I admit I might have looked at the pic... three or four times... before noticing them *cough*

OMG DAASGRRL THOSE ONLINE HERALD VIDEOS. Whenever I'm reading the headlines on an odd computer they start automatically and blast me out of my chair.

The David Bowie song, though. I love it and I cannot wait for his album! But the video is creepy so I turned it off after a while the first time I watched it. It's kind of a bit quavery and introspective, and in that way only it reminds me of Hurt-era Johnny Cash.

WHAT IS THAT THING ON HIS SHOULDER? WHAT IS IT.

Yeah, bloody autoplay. Glad I'm not alone in the creepiness of said video - I'm still a bit boggled at the mundanity of the lyrics in the later half (as long as there's... you, as long as there's... me, yes very good, then) but I suppose maybe they'll grow on me. LIKE THE OTHER HALF OF A CONJOINED TOY.

The Sherlock/Lestrade fic sounds like something I might enjoy, but can you give me a hint as to whether I'll need Benedryl? (i.e. will it trigger my schmoop/fluff allergy?)

LOL... okay, it's always a tricky thing with you, but I'm going to say it's safe. Like, there's not a lot of heavy angst or anything, but nobody degenerates into anything (thank goodness). They're basically written exactly the way I like - emotionally repressed, no big displays of anything, just small things that add up over time. But it is a 'happy' ending, in that there's no lingering angst (or perhaps only as much as you choose to read into it, which I don't *g*). Love to know what you think if you take the plunge - will enable me to calibrate for future reference ;)
