More Holmes brothers fic meta...

Title: Remembering Redbeard
Characters/Pairings: Mycroft Holmes & Sherlock Holmes, Eurus Holmes (referenced)
Rating: G
Word count: 3,900
Warnings/contents: family issues, brotherly love, kidlock
Notes: Inspired by [personal profile] donut_donut, who asked why Mycroft didn't just tell Sherlock who Redbeard was. This brought up a related question that's always bothered me, which is why Mycroft chooses to remind Sherlock of Redbeard on the day of John's wedding, which could be seen as - in my opinion, uncharacteristically - cruel. This fic may or may not provide satisfactory answers, but I still liked the idea enough to write it.

Summary: “So…” Sherlock glanced at him, then away, staring sightlessly out the window, “…does that mean I’ll go crazy too?"

Eurus' song is ended, but her melody lingers on.

=====================

While I'm here, this is a question I've been threatening promising to ask for a while - for you amazing people who write 'long' fic, which I will loosely define as anything over 20,000 words - how do you approach it? I realise for some of you that's a one-shot (sigh) but the longest 'continuous' fic I've ever posted is around 26,000 words (In His Image). And while I loved writing it, I could actually feel the panic creeping up on me once I passed 15,000 words or so. I can comfortably hold about that much plot in my head, more or less, but over that it just felt like it was spiralling out of control. Also, I'd written the first chapter a long time before continuing it, so the writing was split up as well. I wasn't very organised about it - I just had an ending in mind and went for it, typing furiously. Hence the panic *g*

Since then, I've been trying to write fic composed of 'episodes' that total > 15,000 words, but the idea of one continuous story makes my head hurt. However, I think it would be cool to be able to do that. Now I know there's writing advice all around the 'net, but for a lot of you I know your personal styles, which helps a lot. Getting advice from some random person isn't the same thing at all. Is it easy for you, or do you struggle? Do you plan/outline? How much - what level of detail? Plot, characters? Once you outline, is it set in stone, and does that work for you? Have you ever abandoned what you were going to do and gone elsewhere because it wasn't working? Or do you just sit down and write until it's done?

I'm clinging onto [livejournal.com profile] dioscureantwins slightly flippant advice, which was to "just keep writing". LOL. I mean, I KNOW that's what it comes down to, so it probably is the only real approach in the long term. But I'm also curious. So if you'd like to share thoughts, advice, whatever (only if you're so inclined, of course), I'd love to hear it! Thank you :)

See, usually the way I work is I think of something I want to write, and then either write or abandon it within a couple of weeks or so. But I'm going through this weird phase where I have a whole lot of overly ambitious ideas that are too long to write comfortably in a short space, but that I also like too much to abandon. So, while I doubt this will be of interest to m/any people, I'm posting it anyway just to try and keep up some momentum. It's everything I never write - gen (well, at least so far), kidlock (ditto) and worst of all, a WIP. I don't even know *g*

Title: A Study in Bees
Also at: AO3
Status: WIP
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters/Pairings: Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock Holmes, Mummy, Daddy, Redbeard, Bees
Rating: G
Word count: 5,600 (combined)
Warnings/contents: Minor character death
Notes: Heading towards Johnlock, but not for a while. May never be finished, but each chapter is self-contained.
Summary: Sherlock's life, in bees.

One last burst of crazy before I get back to reality. Pirates! is brilliant, by the way (and I'm not a fan of pirate movies in general). I only saw it on DVD, but nevertheless enjoyed it more than Monsters University and far, far more than Despicable Me 2, which I could have walked out in the middle of and not felt bad about it at all. Even if you have zero interest in the vid, I'd love to hear what you thought about MU/DM2 :)

Title: Sherlock Holmes - Pirate Captain
Length: 1.12
Fandom: BBC Sherlock/The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Characters and/or pairings: Sherlock + John = The Pirate Captain + The Pirate With A Scarf
Notes: I recently watched Pirates! Band of Misfits, which features Martin Freeman voicing the long-suffering sidekick of an eccentric pirate captain. Somehow it all felt strangely familiar. For [livejournal.com profile] shadowfireflame, who demanded to know where the crossovers were.

Title: Boys Keep Swinging
By: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Song/Artist: David Bowie
Length: 2.29
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Characters and/or pairings: Sherlock/John friendship
Warnings/kinks/contents: general silliness
Thanks: to [livejournal.com profile] evila_elf for beta
Notes: For the lovely [livejournal.com profile] dioscureantwins, who suggested this song might make for a fun vid. I hope so!
Summary: Boys will be boys. With guns.

Title: Worse Than Death
Also at: AO3
Status: Complete
By: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Fandom: BBC Sherlock (Red Dwarf fusion)
Characters/Pairings: Gen. Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Molly Hooper, (Martha) Hudson, Greg Lestrade, Mycroft Holmes, Anthea. Hints of Sherlock/John and Mycroft/Lestrade, but it's not going to happen *g*
Rating: PG-13 for themes
Word count: 5,200
Warnings/contents: Red Dwarf fusion, attempted humour, crack, meta, gratuitously handsome Lestrade. May contain traces of post-Reichenbach angst (as usual).
Beta: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] evila_elf for being a non-Dwarf guinea pig.
Notes: You know how sometimes there are ideas that are strange and senseless and completely unworkable, and you have to write them anyway? This is one of those times. Hopefully understandable without having seen Red Dwarf, because considerable and detailed liberties have been taken with backstory, but it'll probably seem even weirder than it is.

Summary: In which Sherlock begins his day dead, and things just go downhill for him from there.

Worse Than Death )

Yes, this is a little weird. It's also the first time I've ever written actor!RPF rather than reality show RPF, and oddly, it does make a difference. If you happen to read this and find there's anything I need to fix or rethink before this goes to the comms, I'd really appreciate it if you let me know *g*

Title: In His Image
By: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Characters: John Watson, Mike Stamford, Benedict Cumberbatch
Rating: PG for themes
Word count: 3,500
Summary: In which a rather different John Watson returns to London, runs into an old friend, and meets someone new. As usual.
Warnings/contents: general absurdity, dubious RPF elements, crossover, gratuitous meta, so AU it hurts.
Notes: Thanks very much to [livejournal.com profile] evila_elf, beta and to [livejournal.com profile] xanthe, consulting Brit. All remaining errors are tragically mine. This is what happens when you try to embrace canon and fandom from too many angles at once, but I swear to you it all made perfect sense in my head. Set in early 2011, for reasons which shall become apparent. Also, please do note the fictional aspect of the RPF component. Thank you.

daasgrrl: mycroft and sherlock (wilsonaw)

I had no intention of writing anything any time soon, but then I made the tactical error of reading [livejournal.com profile] nightdog_barks' nanofic, There's A Hole In My Head (Where the Rain Comes In) a couple of days ago and it... followed me home? You know how it is *g* Just a ficlet, unbeta'd, crit very welcome, but I may screen anything substantive if/when I post to the comms (because I compulsively tidy for visitors).

Title: One and One and One is Three
By: [info]daasgrrl
Pairing: gen, Wilson, House
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 1,000
Summary: Things are finally working out for Wilson. Maybe.
Notes: A riff of sorts on [livejournal.com profile] nightdog_barks' tiny-yet-disturbing There's A Hole In My Head (Where the Rain Comes In), but essentially stand-alone. Slightly cracky, but it makes sense in my brain. Which is only fitting. Title taken from a Beatles lyric. Thanks as always to my f-list for being there ♥

I thought earlier this year that maybe I was done with House fic. Turns out I was wrong. Concrit gratefully accepted, particularly stuff that I can, you know, fix *g*

Title: Through the Looking Glass
By: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Rating: Gen, PG-13
Characters: Daniel Wilson, James Wilson
Word count: 1,900
Beta: Thanks as always to [livejournal.com profile] evila_elf for looking it over.
Summary: “Well, it's no use your talking about waking him,” said Tweedledum, “when you're only one of the things in his dream. You know very well you're not real.” - Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass
Notes: Essentially a missing scene from “The Social Contract”. Bizarrely inspired by the discovery of Daniel H. Wilson’s book, How to Survive a Robot Uprising, but not nearly as cracktastic as that might seem to imply *g*

Title: The Penultimate Resolution
By: [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl
Rating: PG-13, House gen, crack
Word count: 2,100
Beta: Thanks very much to [livejournal.com profile] blackmare_9 for coming to the rescue and to [livejournal.com profile] bironic for an assist. Remaining incomprehensibility is mine.
Summary:
It had been five days, nothing was working, and House had become so frustrated that half the hospital had been unwillingly drawn into a high stakes, high-pressure game of Name That Disease.
Spoilers: Takes place after the events of “Birthmarks”, S05x04
Notes: Inspired a comment [livejournal.com profile] nightdog_barks made regarding her post-ep to the above episode. I had been so distracted by the H/W that I hadn’t realized it was the perfect opportunity to ‘fix’ something about House that has been bothering me for seasons. Originally intended as a drabble but developed a will of its own. Any resemblances to other fanfic OCs, living or dead, is entirely coincidental - well, as far as it goes *g*.

Title: Inanimation
By: [personal profile] daasgrrl
Pairing: House/Inanimate Objects (not that way)
Rating: G
Word count: 800
Notes: Crack response to [personal profile] karaokegal's Inanimate Objects poll and the brilliant   crackfic drabbles Jealousy by [personal profile] karaokegaland Envy by [personal profile] drunken_hedghog. Written in 40 minutes, for completely inexplicable reasons.

INANIMATION

It was chaos. Everything was trying to speak at once, and nothing was listening. The Piano had had enough. It started playing the opening chords of Beethoven's Fifth, going heavy on the loud pedal. After a few repetitions, the hubbub finally died down enough for it to be heard.
